MELBOURNE, Australia--National Australia Bank Ltd. (NAB.AU) has written to about 60,000 customers to tell them details of new accounts set up from overseas had been sent to an incorrect email address.

The mistake was caused by human error and identified through internal checks, the bank said Friday.

NAB, one of Australia's largest lenders, said the email that was sent included customers' details such as their names, addresses and account numbers, although not any passwords.

The accounts that were affected were set up by NAB's migrant banking team while the customers were living overseas. The error didn't impact customers who set up an account in Australia.

NAB said customers' accounts have been reviewed and no unusual activity has been identified. About 40% of the customers had either closed or not used their account this year, and 19,000 of the accounts have a balance of less that 2 Australian dollars (US$1.47), it said.

NAB said it had notified industry regulators, including the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
