LIMA -(Dow Jones)- Mining companies plan to invest $11 billion in Peru in the 2007-2011 period, Energy and Mines Minister Juan Valdivia said in a statement late Wednesday.
Key projects include Peru Copper Inc.'s (CUP) Toromocho copper mine that will require $2 billion, and Minera Yanacocha's Minas Conga gold-copper mine that is expected to require $1.5 billion. Minera Yanacocha is operated by Newmont Mining Corp. (NEM).
Oscar Gonzalez Rocha, chief executive officer of Southern Copper Corp. (PCU) recently said his company plans to invest $2.88 billion in Peru by 2011 to increase its copper production by an annual 328,000 tons.
The company currently produces around 350,000 tons of copper in Peru.
Moreover, according to Minister Valdivia, in 2008 mining companies will contribute more than 5.2 billion soles ($1=PEN3.1585) to the regions and municipalities where mining projects are located.
Those funds include a special regional tax known as the "canon" and royalties. The canon payments will be tied to 2007 income tax payments. They also include a PEN500 million voluntary payment for social projects. -By Rebecca Howard, Dow Jones Newswires; 51-1-221 7050; peru@dowjones.com

Just a wee bit more news.

"We have made an offer to purchase all the outstanding
common shares of Peru Copper for C$6.6 per share in cash," Xiao
Yaqing, president of Chinalco told China Daily in an exclusive
interview.

"Concurrent with the announcement of our intention to make
the offer, we agreed to invest C$70 million (US$67 million) to
subscribe to a 9.9 per cent interest in Peru Copper at a price
of C$5.3 per share, " he said.

Peru Copper is listed on the Toronto stock market.

Chinalco's Peru Copper deal is part of its ongoing efforts
in overseas expansion, analysts say.

It already has aluminum-related projects in Australia,
Africa, Southeast Asia and South America, Xiao said.

Chinalco is now the world's fourth-largest aluminum
company.

Peru Copper said it would use the money to fund its
Toromocho project, a copper mine in Morococha in central
Peru.

The company is now also investing in bauxite mining projects
in countries such as Vietnam and Guinea. "Our project in
Vietnam includes bauxite mining and alumina production, with
the total investment of over US$1 billion," said Xiao.

"Now we are also doing exploration work for bauxite mine
reserves in Guinea. The project will have the capacity of over
1 billion tons," he added.

This March Chinalco signed an agreement with the government
of Queensland, Australia, to develop the Aurukun bauxite mining
project. The A$3 billion (US$2.6 billion) deal is by far the
largest investment deal by a Chinese company in Australia.

Overseas mining resources are important for Chinalco, said
Xiao. As China's national aluminum company, Chinalco's quick
expansion has pushed up its demand for the resources.

China now has become the world's largest aluminum products
maker and consumer, but China's bauxite mine resources only
account for 2 per cent of the world total.

"But the bauxite mine resources we have now bought overseas
is equal to one-third of China's total reserves," said Xiao.

"Our overseas projects have contributed a lot to the
development of the local economy," he said. "For instance, our
investment in Australia has helped improve the economy in the
region."

Despite a series of mergers and acquisitions in the world's
aluminum industry, Xiao said Chinalco now has no plans to buy
its global rivals.

In May, the world' largest aluminum company Alcoa of the US
said it agreed to buy the world's second-largest aluminum
company Alcan in Canada.

"Now is not the best time for us to acquire foreign
companies. We are making efforts to make our company more
multinational," he said. Instead, Chinalco chose to "buy many
domestic aluminum companies to increase its capacity".

"Now our sales focus more on the domestic market. We aim to
increase our overseas sales to one-third of the total in the
next 5 to 10 years."

Last year sales revenue of the company was around US$13
billion, a growth of more than 30 per cent year-on-year.

after hours trade of 708,300 at $6.10. Yikes! Possibly an insider sell, but do you think the Chinese are buying to save a few cents? Or someone preparing to make a better offer?

Slow and steady, accumulate for the buyout IMO.

So the 6.20 price per share that they are taking today is off by almost 4 bucks. I was amazed that CUP did not move higher then what it got to today.

The company is still in the exploration stage, but it has generated some buzz because its primary mining target, copper, is so hot right now. As the price of copper itself soars, the stocks of copper-mining companies like Southern Copper (NYSE: PCU) have been consistently hitting 52-week highs. And with the massive $26 billion buyout of Phelps Dodge by Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX), Peru Copper shareholders certainly have reason to believe that their $660 million company could be a serious takeover candidate.

The company is currently working with UBS to figure out its next move. It claims it's keeping all of its options open -- in addition to considering an outright sale of the company, it's also mulling bringing in a partner to help with development of the Toromocho Project, or raising capital to do the development itself.

CAPS players have largely supported the stock and believe it could be worth a lot more than it's currently selling for. All-Star Jeffreyw posits:

Peru Copper is undervalued at $5/share. As copper prices and demand increase, the market will fairly value [the company] (around $10/share) or it will be bought by another company for close to fair value.

UofMNorthman also points out that the stock has a thin following on Wall Street and calls it "a diamond in the rough."

Hmmm, CUP might be worth watching in the coming year. See article below (only a portion of the article is shown)

I bought CUP for 3.46 on 11/16/06 and it has floated around this level ever since, except right after this announcement when it shot up over $4 for a short time. I think that once they figure out how much their new deposit is worth, the share price should go up again. Any thoughts?
