Market Talk:
Diageo Prospects Look Bright Despite Near-Term Weakness in
US
0836 GMT - Diageo's 1H results were strong at a group level and
the liquor maker is set for growth in the medium-term despite a
disappointing performance in North America, Jefferies analyst
Edward Mundy says in a note. "As we have been flagging (...), U.S.
growth is normalizing as pandemic effects recede, and we would use
near term bumpiness as this growth normalization takes place to buy
into a top tier staples stock," Mundy says. Jefferies has a buy
rating on the stock and price target of 4,300 pence. Diageo shares
are down 3.8% at 3,535.0 pence. (michael.susin@wsj.com)

Diageo's 1H US Market Miss Disappoints
0806 GMT - Diageo's North America missed expectations while
Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific performance was above market
views, RBC Capital Markets James Edwardes Jones and Emma Letheren
say in a note. The liquor maker reported 3.0% organic sales growth
compared with 6.4% consensus in the U.S. market, they highlight.
Given that North America isn't just the largest market for the
liquor maker--representing more than 50% of its FY 2022 EBIT--but
also the highest margin, making the miss "the most significant
element of these results", they add. "Outlook remains for FY 2023
sales growth...but U.S. sales growth 'to continue to normalize'
with (we presume deliberately) vague margin comments," they add.
