European airlines including Ryanair Holdings PLC, easyJet PLC
and Volotea SA have cancelled flights to and from major Italian
airports on Wednesday amid a call for a nationwide strike from
several workers' unions.
Milan's Bergamo and Malpensa airports, as well as Aeroporti di
Roma, the company operating all airports in the Italian capital,
said in different statements there could be cancellations and
delays due to the strikes on Wednesday.
The return to prepandemic levels of flight activity has sparked
a fierce competition among carriers, to the detriment of workers,
said in a statement Unione Sindacale di Base, one of the unions
organizing the strike. A spokesman for the Uiltrasporti union said
budget airlines Ryanair, easyJet and Volotea had been forced to
cancel some flights as a result of the actions.
ITA Airways, the country's national carrier, said it was only
affected by an air controller strike in Milan, and that it had
taken action over the past few days to reroute the affected
passengers and avoid disruption.
