Netflix Inc. has struck a multi-year deal to get
audience-measurement data from Nielsen Holdings PLC as the
streaming platform pushes into ad-supported viewing, the companies
said.
As part of the deal, Netflix will subscribe to Nielsen's
National TV measurement data and Streaming Platform Ratings in the
U.S. In Mexico and Poland, Netflix will subscribe to cross-platform
audience insights, which are derived from streaming panels in each
respective market.
Netflix has been reluctant to reveal viewership data for its
shows, arguing that ratings for shows on its service are irrelevant
since it didn't previously sell advertising. But that changed in
November, when Netflix rolled out its ad-supported tier for $6.99 a
month.
