Ericsson AB said Wednesday that it has been selected by BT Group PLC to deploy the U.K. telecommunications company's 5G networks in London, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and other major U.K. cities.

The Swedish maker of telecommunications equipment said it will provide radio access network connectivity to BT, building on another deal for the core part of BT's 5G networks signed between the companies earlier this year.

Ericsson said it will also modernize BT's existing 2G and 4G radio access network infrastructure.

BT is seeking to reduce its reliance on Chinese equipment provider Huawei Technologies Co. in compliance with U.K. government requirements, after telecom companies were ordered in July to remove Huawei equipment from their U.K. 5G networks by 2027.
