TotalEnergies SE and Veolia Environnement SA said Tuesday that they would partner in a research project with the long-term goal of producing biofuel.

The French energy company and the resource-management company said they have joined forces to accelerate the development of microalgae cultivation using carbon dioxide, with the ultimate goal of transforming the algae into biofuels with low carbon intensity.

According to the companies, Veolia will be in charge of optimizing management of the microalgae's aquatic environment, while TotalEnergies will work on the cultivation of biomass to produce biofuels and on carbon-dioxide capture and utilization technologies.
