$XEC Cimarex downgraded at Imperial on weak outlook for nat gas prices

Cimarex Energy (XEC -4.3%) sinks to its lowest level in seven years as Imperial Capital downgrades shares to In-Line, citing deteriorating prices for U.S. natural gas and natural gas liquids; oil names are broadly lower as crude oil prices fall ~4%.

Imperial sees XEC as a well-managed company with a strong balance sheet and ample liquidity, but earnings will be hit by the company's highly leverage to gas and natural gas liquids, with gas accounting for 42% of its total estimated oil and gas production of 270K boe/day in 2019 and NGL comprising 27%.

XEC's average Sell Side Rating is Outperform and its Seeking Alpha Authors' Rating is Bullish, while its Quant Rating is Neutral.

Analysts keep upping its target price. Raymond James (NYSE:RJF) raised its target October 14 by $12 to $106. Others increasing the target price above $100 in October include Cowen & Company and Societe Generale to $110 and $112 respectively.

This type of herd mentality usually indicates another move is in the works. However, with its stock up 84% year-to-date through October 16, it's unlikely to be substantial; at least not in the next three to six months. Historically it's outperformed both the index and its E&P peers. That you can take to the bank.

Cimarex Energy's (NYSE:XEC) operations in the Permian Basin include 122 wells with proved reserves of 697 billion cubic feet equivalent as of the end of 2012. Its production in the first part of 2013 was 50% natural gas and 50% oil and natural gas liquids.

Although oil generates just 32% of its production in terms of volume (Gas 50%, Oil 32%, NGLs 18%), that amounts to 63% of revenue in dollars. As a result of its strong returns from oil and liquids it continues to invest heavily in the Permian Basin in West Texas and New Mexico as well as at its Cana-Woodford shale properties in Western Oklahoma.

FieldPoint Petroleum Begins Drilling Second Horizontal Well Project in Lea County, New Mexico

Cimarex Energy to be Well Operator

AUSTIN, Texas, July 16, 2012 /CNW/ - FieldPoint Petroleum Corporation (NYSE/MKT: FPP) announced today that drilling has begun on the East Lusk 15 Federal #2 in Lea County, New Mexico. The Company has an operating agreement with Cimarex Energy Co, (NYSE: XEC) www.cimarex.com, to drill this well that will target the Bone Spring formation. FieldPoint has pre-paid its expected share of the drilling cost, which is approximately $1.3 million. There will, of course, be additional completion costs should the drilling operation be successful.

As with the Company's well #1 on this property, this horizontal well is planned to be drilled vertically to a depth of approximately 9,500 feet, to the Bone Spring formation, and approximately 4,000 to 5,000 feet laterally within the formation to the bottom hole location. The estimated time for drilling and completion is expected to be approximately 60 to 90 days.

FieldPoint's President and CEO, Ray Reaves stated, "As I have mentioned before, there are two highly important aspects of this drilling program. First, Cimarex Energy is one of the best in the industry at completing wells in the Bone Spring formation. This is very important for well success and optimal well production. And second, if successful, this could lead to drilling a third well on this lease, which could serve to significantly increase our daily production and proved producing reserve base."

Also as with well #1, FieldPoint will own a 43.75% working interest, Cimarex will own a 37.5% working interest, and other partners will own the remaining 18.75% working interest in the two planned wells.

About FieldPoint Petroleum Corp. www.fppcorp.com

FieldPoint Petroleum Corporation is engaged in oil and gas exploration, production and acquisition, primarily in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.

Stifel Nicolaus is out with its report today on Cimarex Energy (NYSE: XEC), initiating XEC at Hold.

In a note to clients, Stifel Nicolaus writes, "Cimarex's 44% liquids weighting and relatively unhedged production growth makes XEC exposed to crude oil movements. This exposure, combined with our negative short-term (1-2 months) bias on crude oil prices makes XEC's stock price vulnerable for further corrections and is the key reason for our Hold rating."

Cimarex drilled four gross (3.8 net) Gulf Coast wells in the first quarter of 2010, of which one was unsuccessful. First-quarter 2010 Gulf Coast production volumes averaged 190 MMcfe/d, as compared to 116 MMcfe/d and 64 MMcfe/d during the fourth and first quarter of 2009, respectively.

Cimarex's first-quarter 2010 Gulf Coast drilling has been primarily near Beaumont in Jefferson County, Texas where three gross (2.8 net) wells have been drilled: the Jefferson Airplane #1 and #4 and the Nine Dragons #1. The Jefferson Airplane #1 (96% working interest) was brought on production in February and the Jefferson Airplane #4 (96% working interest) is being side-tracked for mechanical reasons. The Nine Dragons # 1 (85% working interest) was drilled into a new reservoir and was brought on production in late March at a restricted rate of 8 MMcfe/d. The Nine Dragons #1 production is expected to be increased to rates comparable to the Two Sisters #1 (see below) as pipeline capacity becomes available.

The following table summarizes the production rates from the wells drilled by Cimarex near Beaumont:
