Telecom Italia SpA (TIT.MI) said Thursday it hadn't engaged in anti-competitive behavior following the decision of the Italian antitrust authority to open an investigation into the company.

Responding to the decision, Telecom Italia said it has always operated in compliance with regulations and categorically denied any coordination with other telecom operators regarding its commercial strategy, including in relation to changes in its billing cycles.

AGCM, the Italian antitrust authority, said Thursday that at a meeting on Feb. 7 it had decided to initiate an investigation into Telecom Italia, Vodafone, Fastweb, Wind Tre and Assotelecomunicazioni, or Asstel, an industry trade association. The investigation aims to determine whether the telecom operators coordinated their commercial strategies related to the implementation of changes in the billing cycle following the introduction of new regulatory obligations, the antitrust authority said.

The Italian competition authority also said that, together with the financial police, it had carried out inspections Thursday at the headquarters of the companies under investigation, as well as at the trade association. Proceedings will be concluded by March 31, 2019, the antitrust authority said.
