International stocks trading in New York closed mostly higher Monday.

The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts increased 0.6% to 151.17. The European index rose 0.8% to 139.68. The Asian index gained 0.9% to 177.13. And the emerging-markets index improved 0.1% to 327.97.

Meanwhile, the Latin American index fell 2% to 262.45.

Brazilian companies were among those with ADRs that traded actively.

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (BABA) is leading a $600 million funding round in SenseTime Group Ltd., which makes surveillance systems using facial recognition for law enforcement and commercial applications. ADRs rose 1.4% to $169.87.

Novartis AG (NVS, NOVN.EB) has agreed to buy U.S.-based gene-therapy company AveXis Inc for $8.7 billion, marking the first big bet by the Swiss pharmaceutical giant's new chief as he looks to refresh his drug-development pipeline. ADRs rose 1.1% to $81.07.

ADRs of Brazilian companies fell on Monday amid uncertainty over the October presidential election. Former Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva surrendered to police on Saturday to begin serving a 12-year jail sentence for corruption. He has denied the charges, saying he is the victim of a witch hunt intended to stop him from running in the election, which polls showed he was favored to win. State oil company Petróleo Brasileiro SA (PBR, PETR3.BR, PETR4.BR) fell 3.9% to $13.38, and Banco Bradesco SA (BBD, BBDC4.BR) fell 4.8% to $9.97.
