The U.K.'s Office of Communications said Tuesday that it has opened separate investigations into Vodafone Group PLC (VOD.LN) and BT Group PLC (BT.A.LN), after it found errors in cellphone-coverage data.

The British telecommunications regulator launched two separate probes to determine whether the companies fulfilled their obligation to provide accurate information, it said.

Ofcom found errors in data provided by BT's EE brand that overpredicted its 3G coverage, particularly in rural areas, the regulator said. It also identified errors in Vodafone data that underpredicted the company's 4G coverage.
