International stocks trading in New York finished Monday mostly
higher.
The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts rose 0.5%,
to 138.27. The European index was up 0.8%, to close at 128.90. The
Asian index fell about 0.3%, to 158.38, but the Latin American
index was 0.4% higher, closing at 245.35. The emerging markets
index decreased 0.2%, to 291.21.
The ADRs for major oil companies traded actively on Monday, as
sanctions on the oil industry in Iran, the third-largest producer
in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, took full
effect. The ADR for BP plc (BP) rose 2.4%, to $42.61, while the ADR
for Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR) was up 1.8%, to $16.42. The two
ADRs associated with Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDS.A, RDS.B) were both
up 1.8%.
The ADR for STMicroelectronics NV (STM) also traded actively on
Monday, falling 3.8%, to end at $15.21. The ADR fell even as the
semiconductor company announced a new $750 million share buyback
program that may last up to three years. That effort will cover the
company's ADRs trading on the New York Stock Exchange, as well as
shares trading on European exchanges.
