Goldcorp Inc. (GG) shares were up 11% to $10.71 in early Monday trading in heavier-than-average volume.

Newmont Mining Corp. (NEM) said earlier it agreed to acquire Goldcorp in an all-stock transaction valued at $10 billion.

Shares of Newmont Mining were down 5.5% to $32.95.

The deal comes after Barrick Gold Corp.'s (GOLD) deal in September for Randgold Resources.
