Verizon Communications Inc. said it will prioritize network demand from hospitals, first responders and government agencies as the U.S. tries to mitigate the spread of the new coronavirus.

The wireless carrier is increasing its planned annual capital expenditure to between $17.5 billion and $18.5 billion this year -- from its earlier $17 billion to 18 billion range -- to make its network more robust and speed up its rollout of faster 5G service, it said Thursday.

Verizon hasn't yet seen a measurable increase in data usage from the growing number of workers logging in remotely and students taking lessons online as companies and schools try to blunt the pandemic, but is continuing to monitor it, the company said.
