The biggest losers during the bear market are making the best comebacks. I bought every NASDAQ 100 stock that dropped below $10 and almost all of them have made big gains in Oct and Nov.

Oh Baby! BEAS T/A CHART.

Possible breakout, but lookout for break-DOWN. A fall to 10.00 will destroy the possibility of a rally. But keep an eye on this one. Could rally to upper teens or maybe 20.

However, wait until this one moves to 12.75 or so until buying.

NOTE: Strong support doubled @ 9.50 (approx.). Place stop order @ 9.00

T/A Tip: Use MACD-Hist & Stochastic together. If both indicators agree with your prediction, then it's much more likely of following through. They work great together on predicting breakouts.

BEA sets new products to improve software functions

NEW YORK, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Software maker BEA Systems Inc.(NasdaqNM:BEAS - news) next week is expected to announce a new product designed to allow developers to create programs that quickly retrieve specific information from among the mountains of data that companies store on hundreds of different databases.

The new product, called Liquid Data, is one of several new products that BEA is developing to allow applications to manage and correct themselves, improve the information they provide, and make them more secure.

``That's very critical,'' BEA Chief Executive Alfred Chuang recently told investors at Merrill Lynch's annual software and Internet conference held this week.

San Jose, California-based BEA is scheduled to release its third-quarter financial results Tuesday and hold a one-day conference with analysts on Thursday.

On Nov. 1, it warned its quarterly results would not meet the consensus of analysts expectations because of the weakened economy. BEA said it expected earnings, before charges, to be 5 cents or 6 cents a share said it would cut it work force by 9 percent to 10 percent.

Since then, shares of BEA have risen 35 percent, closing Friday at $15.74, up 80 cents, or 5 percent.

BEA is the No. 1 market leader in application servers -- a layer of software which developers use as a foundation for building new programs -- a highly competitive area dominated by BEA and No. 2 International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM - news). In addition, companies such as Sun Microsystems Inc.'s (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news) iPlanet, Oracle Corp. (NasdaqNM:ORCL - news) and Iona Technologies Plc (NasdaqNM:IONA - news) have, within the past year, made aggressive moves into the area.

``It's somewhat of a change,'' Prudential analyst John McPeake said, who has a ``hold'' rating on the stock. ``They're under price pressure. They need to add functionality to their suite to hold unit pricing. I don't think its time to think everything's fine for BEA.''

As the complexity of business information has increased, the application server makers have moved to broaden product offerings.

Integration capabilities have now become a nearly standard offering and most offer Web services, a more advanced integration that allows information to be packaged as building blocks that can be used and reused easily by different computer systems.

BEA's products are based on Sun's Java language, which is expected to face greater competition as Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) rolls out its own business application and integration software strategy called .NET.

In addition to Liquid Data, which focuses on the area of ``real time data aggregation technology'' Chuang said BEA is looking to expand into four other major categories:

* Products that ensure the software works properly. If an application fails and the computer screen freezes, the technology will ensure it will resume from where it left off and not lose any data or work.

BEA is working on an agreement with application performance and testing software maker Mercury Interactive to offer the technology that would allow an application to monitor its own performance, Chuang said.

* Products to ensure applications running on any type of device -- a hand-held computer, two-way pager or personal computer -- displays information securely to the correct user.

* Products that keep updating spreadsheets and documents with real-time information, rather than waiting for a user to update it.

* Software that allows a single application to run on any kind of device.

Software Stocks Rally, See Light at End of Tunnel

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Software stocks rallied during the day on Wednesday as lower interest rates, cautiously positive management statements and user group meetings, melded in the minds of investors beginning to believe the worst may be over, analysts said.

But by the end of the day, the euphoria waned and many double-digit rises closed as modest increases.

The Goldman Sachs software index (GSO.0), which had risen more than 4 percent during the day, closed up 1.06 percent, above the less than marginal rise the overall tech-laden Nasdaq composite recorded for the day.

``Everyone's still talking about activity levels,'' Merrill Lynch software analyst Chris Shilakes said. Merrill is holding a two-day software conference in Monterey, California, where 60 companies were scheduled deliver presentations to investors.

``They're saying the pipeline does seem to have firmed up some,'' Shilakes added. ``That seems to be the consistent message.''

Stocks with the biggest boosts during the past two days were those battered the worst during the past year.

``The whole supply chain sector is up,'' Credit Suisse First Boston analyst Brent Thill said. ``There's a notion the industry is beginning to see the bottom of the trough or probably not any more deep crevices.''

Shares of Commerce One, which held a users meeting in Santa Clara, California Wednesday, gave up most of its gains, and closed up a penny to $3.02 after rising as high as $3.52 during the day. Shares of i2, whose chief executive spoke at the Merrill conference, closed up 27 cents, or 4 percent, to $6.42.

Manugistics rose $1.49, or 16 percent, to $10.56. Ariba Inc. (Nasdaq:ARBA - news) was up 23 cents, or 5 percent, to close at $4.60. PurchasePro closed up 9 cents, or 16 percent, to 66 cents.

``People think they are going to survive, which was not so certain a couple of months ago,'' Goldman Sachs software analyst Thomas Berquist said.

PLAYING CATCH-UP

Most of those stocks once traded above $100 a share and within the past year have lost about 90 percent of their value.

``They're playing some catch-up,'' Bob Austrian, Banc of America Securities analyst, said.

Last week, executives from such companies such as Serena Software Inc.(Nasdaq:SRNA - news) and Manugistics said they were cautiously optimistic that the worst was over. In addition, on Tuesday the U.S. Federal Reserve (news - web sites) cut interest rates a half a point to 2 percent, their lowest level in 40 years. Investors hope that will make it cheaper for businesses to borrow money to buy new technology, such as software, analysts said.

In addition, infrastructure and network software stocks such as BEA Systems Inc.(Nasdaq:BEAS - news), Akamai Technologies Inc (Nasdaq:AKAM - news), SilverStream Software Inc.(Nasdaq:SSSW - news) were swept along in the wave of enthusiasm.

Other makers of applications -- software that performs specific jobs, such as automating selling, content management and analyzing buyer behavior --- also saw their stocks rally.

Siebel Systems Inc.(Nasdaq:SEBL - news) was up 2 percent, or 41 cents to $22.19 Vignette Corp.(Nasdaq:VIGN - news) shares rose about 1 percent, or 4 cents to $5.22 and Brio Software Inc.(Nasdaq:BRIO - news) shares closed up 7 percent or 9 cents, to $1.39.

``The September quarter was the low watermark fundamentally,'' Austrian said. ``We've had a lot of rate cut fiscal stimulus. The applications group was down sharply through September. They've rallied well over the past two days.''

In addition to its own existing OEM partnership with BEA, Autonomy has now joined the new BEA Portal Solution program and will offer four portlets on the new BEA Portlet Gallery(TM).

Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal allows line of business managers to mass-produce and mass-customize portals

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. and SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 2001--

Joint solution for harnessing the power of BEA WebLogic Portal and

Bowstreet Business Web Factory to increase return on investments

Bowstreet (www.bowstreet.com) and BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS - news) today announced a new product called the Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal, designed to automate the mass production of portal applications across the enterprise. The Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal will enable business users to automate the construction and management of portal applications and cascading portals across a network of employees, partners or customers. The Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal, available later this year, will work in tandem with BEA WebLogic Portal(TM) 4.0, announced separately today.

The Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal will let companies create portals in a matter of days, allowing customers to slash maintenance and customization costs, and reap significant returns on their application development investments. In order to scale these portals across the Internet, Bowstreet will leverage the strength of the BEA WebLogic Portal's foundation, administration, personalization and integration services. The Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal will automate these and other services to simplify the development, deployment and multi-team administration of portal applications.

For example, a global automobile manufacturer can use the BEA WebLogic Portal to create a master portal consisting of all the content and services employees, partners and customers will need to access. The Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal would then allow business managers throughout the company to instruct the master portal to create cascading portals for thousands of dealers or customers in a matter of days. Similarly, these dealers and customers will be able to delegate the creation and mass-customization of sub-portals for their customers.

``The need to create families of web applications and to unify those applications across the enterprise is driving the move to Generation 3 Portals. These new Gen 3 solutions require a robust application architecture and the automated creation and management of cascading portals that provide for complex process integration and full web services support,'' said Gene Phifer, vice president and research director, Gartner, Inc.

Built on the same patent-pending, parametric-automation technology found in Bowstreet's Business Web Factory, the Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal will be comprised of a set of wizards and tools, as well as a run-time component for mass-producing and mass-customizing portal applications. The Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal will act as a ``portal factory'' to create unique, just-in-time composite web applications based on individual, varying business scenarios or market needs.

With the Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal solution:

Non-technical business managers will be able to create, manage and customize families of portals. They can accomplish this through a simple point-and-click wizard, helping companies save on development time and resources.
Companies will be able to distribute, manage, aggregate and syndicate portals across departments, and partners' and customers' web sites.
Companies will be able to automate the creation of new portals based on the user's context - the device, the user class, access rights and more.
Information technology professionals will be able to reduce the time and effort required to add functionality, support new variations, and manage changes across deployed cascading portal applications.
``The Bowstreet Factory for BEA WebLogic Portal will allow customers to create thousands of portal applications, constantly change or update them, and cascade those portals to networks of employees, partners or customers,'' said Pat O'Haren, senior director of marketing, BEA Application Components Division. ``BEA WebLogic Portal provides the underlying portal foundation, personalization, integration and e-business infrastructure software so families of portals can scale across the web.''

``We view BEA WebLogic Portal as an extremely powerful platform upon which portal applications can run,'' said Rose O'Donnell, vice president of engineering, Bowstreet. ``We can augment BEA's solution with automation, mass-production and mass-customization of portals, enabling modifications as business conditions change in only days versus weeks or months.''

BEA Launches Portal Star Solution Initiative With Support From 66 Partners

Speeding Enterprise Portal Deployments: BEA Portlet Gallery to Showcase 1,000 Application Portlets Online in Six Months

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS - news), one of the world's leading e-business infrastructure software companies, today announced the new BEA Portlet Gallery(TM), as well as 66 initial companies that have qualified as BEA Portal Star Solution partners. With a network of 2,100 partners, BEA expects to reach its goal of 1,000 content, Web Services and application portlets posted to the BEA Portlet Gallery by the end of April 2002. A portlet is a module within a portal that provides real-time access to information or applications, such as news, weather, email, discussion groups and more.

The BEA Portal Star Solution initiative is designed for partners who will meet one of the following criteria: they build application portlets for BEA WebLogic Portal(TM) 4.0; they integrate their applications to BEA WebLogic Portal 4.0, or they develop consulting practices around BEA's portal product. With BEA Portal Star Solution partners, customers will be able to easily create specific portals for their own partners, suppliers, customers and employees leveraging pre-integrated partner solutions for content management, search, syndicated content, security, collaboration, Web Services, and business intelligence and analytics. Many of the partners that have qualified for the Portal Star Solution initiative, including leading system integrators and independent software vendors, are already building and integrating portlets, portal applications and services on the BEA WebLogic Portal. Some of these partners include CSC, PeopleSoft, ScreamingMedia and WebEx Communications.

``Many of our clients, such as Nokia and Johnson Controls, have faced multiple business-to-employee initiatives, all of which need to achieve maximum value while providing immediate impact and tangible ROI,'' said Joe Eazor, CEO of Springbow. ``Our solution set encompasses a wide range of Web-enabled services and is centered on enterprise portal design and implementation. For this reason, all of our solutions are built on enterprise technology from BEA Systems.''

``Bowstreet enthusiastically supports BEA's efforts to form a partner coalition around a standard portal framework,'' stated Rose O'Donnell, vice president of engineering, Bowstreet. ``By providing integration to BEA WebLogic Portal, Bowstreet enables customers to achieve tremendous economies of scale when rolling out families of portal applications to address multiple e-business initiatives. When standardized, the components found in the BEA Portlet Gallery can be assembled by Bowstreet into massively customizable portal applications that reduce maintenance costs over the life of the application.''

The BEA Portlet Gallery is an online community highlighting partner solutions integrated with the BEA WebLogic Portal, to be available from www.bea.com at the end of November. The gallery is designed to allow customers and system integrators to access and search hundreds of application, content and Web Services portlets. The BEA Portlet Gallery will allow customers to quickly browse and select the portlets that best fit their needs. Detailed descriptions, white papers, FAQs and demos will allow customers to take immediate advantage of the offerings within the BEA Portlet Gallery. Through the gallery, BEA's software partners will have a much greater opportunity to work with BEA's system integrator partners to create repeatable solution sets and business practices targeted at specific industry verticals.

``Our clients expect us to deliver platform technologies that can be tailored and quickly integrated into their enterprise,'' said David Reinke, vice president, Braun Consulting. ``With the introduction of BEA WebLogic Portal 4.0 and the BEA Portlet Gallery, we can quickly access, assemble and integrate best-of-breed technologies from vendors like Documentum, Business Objects and Autonomy into the BEA WebLogic E-Business Platform. This model enables our clients to more rapidly introduce sophisticated interactivity with their customers and partners which lowers total cost of ownership and helps build competitive advantage in the marketplace.''

The initial 66 qualified partners, as well as joint customers, will benefit from BEA WebLogic Portal's strict adherence to Java standards, open portal foundation and integration services. BEA Portal Star Solution partners will form consulting practices around BEA WebLogic Portal, or provide integrated solutions for content management, search, syndicated content, security, collaboration, Web Services, among others. The initial partners committed to the BEA Portal Star Solution follow:

BEA Unanimously Named Market Leader by All Major Industry Analyst Firms

#1 Market Share Position in Application Servers Confirmed by Leading Research Firm

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS - news), one of the world's leading e-business infrastructure software companies, today announced that independent research conducted by leading industry analyst firm Gartner Dataquest shows that BEA holds 41% of the new direct license revenue in the application server software market in 2000, a figure that is 10 share points higher than its closest competitor*. With this research, BEA has secured unanimous confirmation of its first place market position by every major industry analyst firm tracking the application server market.

The Gartner market analysis revealed the following market share results:

BEA - 41%

IBM - 31%

iPlanet - 13%

Oracle - 4%

HP Bluestone - 4%

Gartner, META Group, IDC and other leading industry analyst firms continue to name BEA the market leader for application servers based on software license revenue and on units deployed by global enterprises. Complementing Gartner's findings, a recent survey of Fortune 2000-class enterprises conducted by leading industry research firm META Group revealed that BEA holds 37% of the market for deployed application servers, a number that is nearly 70% higher than IBM. For applications leveraging Enterprise JavaBeans, BEA holds an even more commanding lead, nearly 4-to-1 over the number two vendor. ``No matter how industry analysts evaluate the market for application servers, BEA consistently emerges as the clear leader,'' said Tod Nielsen, chief marketing officer, BEA Systems. ``The detailed research from Gartner validates what we are hearing from our 11,000 customers and 2,100 partners: BEA is the preferred choice in the application server market.''

Leading enterprises, including the majority of Fortune 500 and Fortune Global 500 companies, continue to select BEA over the competition as the cornerstone of their e-business infrastructure. ``Knight Ridder Digital chose BEA WebLogic® as the e-business platform for Real Cities, a one-stop Web destination that combines the best in Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism, local news, interactive services and useful information about the city in which you live,'' said Rohn Jay Miller, senior vice president of Product & Technology Development at Knight Ridder Digital. ``We rely on BEA's technology as the foundation of the publishing system we use to power our network. BEA WebLogic provides a flexible, massively scalable, dependable platform that ensures the information people have come to rely upon will be available all day, every day without fail.''
