Firefly Energy Inc., formed to create the next generation of lead acid battery technology based on a material sciences innovation discovered by Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT), today announced the appointment of Wayne Downing to the company's Advisory Board. Downing retired from active service in the military as a four star General in 1996 after a distinguished 34 year career in the U.S. Army. His career included senior commands in infantry, armored, airborne, special operations and joint units. He commanded all U.S. special operations forces during the 1989 invasion of Panama and commanded a joint special operations task force deep behind Iraqi lines during the Gulf War. Downing culminated his career as Commander in Chief of the US Special Operations Command (SOCOM). As Commander at SOCOM, he was responsible for all special operations forces in the US Army, Navy and Air Force. "Wayne Downing brings strategic perspective on both current and future challenges faced by our armed services, and he understands firsthand how battery capabilities can be a critical impediment or enabler for high performing military equipment," said Edward F. Williams, CEO of Firefly Energy. "Wayne's appointment represents a key asset to Firefly as we continue to establish dual-uses for our advanced battery technology in both military and commercial marketplaces," Williams concluded. Downing is actively involved in a number of public and private sector boards around the world, such as Science Applications International Corporation. He is also a noted analyst on military issues and is seen frequently on NBC's "Today Show" and MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews". "I'm pleased to be joining Firefly Energy's Advisory Board," said Wayne Downing. "The company has some very novel 'horizontal' battery technology that will apply across the range of non-portable military applications," concluded Downing. Downing joins existing Advisory Board members: Dr. Robert Nelson, founder of the Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium (ALABC); Michael Kepros, former R&D Director of GNB Technologies (now Exide); and Chuck Mahan, former Lieutenant General of the U.S. Army, who as the leader of the G4 branch of the U.S. Army, was responsible for managing yearly worldwide logistics programs valued at more than $20 billion. About Firefly Energy (www.fireflyenergy.com): Firefly Energy Inc. ("Firefly") is in the business to produce and license advanced lead-acid battery technologies, which hold the opportunity for a major impact in the $30 billion worldwide battery market. The technology can deliver a disruptive combination of high performance, extremely low weight and reduced cost in a battery utilizing traditional, but non-corrosive, lead-acid chemistry. Firefly's technology delivers a performance associated with advanced materials (Nickel Metal Hydride & Lithium) at a cost similar to lead acid batteries. The company was launched as a spin-out from Caterpillar on May 1, 2003, and is headed by co-founders Edward Williams (CEO), Mil Ovan (Sr. VP), and Kurtis Kelley (Chief Scientist). Investors include Caterpillar, United Defense, L.P. (NYSE:UDI), Chicago-area Venture Capital firm KB Partners, and the State of Illinois' Illinois Finance Authority.
