ATCO Sustainable Communities and the George Gordon First Nation
today celebrated the opening of the new George Gordon Childcare
Facility; specially designed to serve pressing community needs. The
George Gordon First Nation is a community of 3,300 people located
120 km north of Regina, Sask.
Developed through extensive community consultations, the 4,500
sq.ft. facility is the first project completed by ATCO Sustainable
Communities, a new ATCO company that provides a full range of
pre-fabricated building solutions for Indigenous and other remote
communities.
"This childcare facility combines ATCO's modern construction
technology with our long history of forming successful Aboriginal
partnerships," said Nancy Southern, President & Chief Executive
Officer, ATCO Group, who attended the opening ceremony. "It is our
goal to provide Aboriginal communities with sustainable facilities
that contribute to a high quality of life."
The new facility can accommodate 48 students, which nearly
doubles the capacity of the former daycare that was prone to
flooding. It is energy efficient and low maintenance featuring
child-size amenities, bright offices and a durable metal roof. The
facility was delivered to the site as four large pre-fabricated
blocks and constructed over the course of four weeks.
"Our new childcare facility is more than just the extra space we
needed so that no child in this community is turned away," said
George Gordon First Nation Chief Shawn Longman. "It provides the
safe, healthy and inviting environment all our children deserve to
learn, grow and have fun."
The opening ceremony also included the signing of a Relationship
Agreement between ATCO Sustainable Communities and the George
Gordon First Nation.
"The Relationship Agreement represents a joint commitment to
work together on long-term community solutions," said Boris Rassin,
President, ATCO Sustainable Communities. "We look forward to
collaborating on community planning and developing sustainable
infrastructure that reflects the culture and values of this
community."
ATCO Sustainable Communities can design and build any facility a
community may need ranging from offices, schools and daycare
centres to residential housing, hockey arenas and retail outlets.
The company also provides utility infrastructure, such as water
purification and distributed power generation facilities.
Headquartered in Calgary, ATCO Sustainable Communities is part
of the ATCO Group of Companies. ATCO Group, with more than 8,800
employees and assets of approximately $13 billion, delivers service
