Washington Post Co. (WPO) has named Marty Baron the new
executive editor of its eponymous newspaper, effective Jan. 2.
He will replace Marcus Brauchli, who has been named vice
president of the company, effective Dec. 31.
"We are thrilled to have Marty Baron lead The Washington Post's
newsroom," said Katharine Weymouth, publisher of the Post. "He has
a demonstrated record of producing the highest quality journalism,
which matches the legacy and expectations of The Post."
Mr. Baron has served as editor at the Boston Globe since 2001,
during which time the paper won six Pulitzer Prizes. He previously
worked at the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and the Miami
Herald.
Mr. Brauchli came to the Post from The Wall Street
Journal--owned by News Corp. (NWSA), which also publishes this
newswire--where he worked as managing editor.
Earlier this month, Washington Post reported it had swung to a
third-quarter profit as the company posted fewer restructuring and
other charges, although revenue was flat as its education division
continued to struggle.
Class B shares rose $2.83 to $340.75 in recent trading. The
stock has fallen 9.6% so far this year.
