With winter upon us, ATCO Gas is launching a province-wide campaign, warning Albertans about the potential dangers of carbon monoxide.

"People need to know that when they are heating their homes or businesses, or warming their cars, there's a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning," said Brian Hahn, President, ATCO Gas. "It's critical that we learn how to protect ourselves and our families."

Often referred to as the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless, tasteless, and toxic gas that can cause sudden illness and in some instances, death. In an enclosed space such as a home or garage, even a small amount of carbon monoxide can be dangerous.

Last year alone, ATCO Gas received nearly 3,300 calls relating to carbon monoxide and exposure to it. To prevent carbon monoxide build up, people are urged to take the following precautions:

-- Have a qualified technician inspect fuel-burning appliances annually
-- Never leave a car running in a garage, even with the overhead door open
-- Always have a fresh air supply while using a wood-burning fireplace
-- Check the flame of all natural gas appliances regularly - it should be
    blue
-- Keep all flue vents and chimneys free of blockages
-- Install an approved carbon monoxide detector

Only a carbon monoxide detector can alert you to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. In an effort to raise awareness, ATCO Gas will be giving away a carbon monoxide detector every weekday until March 31, 2011. To learn more, visit atcogas.com.
