HONG KONG--Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. (0293.HK) said Friday
that it ordered four additional widebody aircraft from Boeing Co.
(BA) to meet rising demand for long-haul passenger and cargo
traffic over the next few years.
The Hong Kong-based airline said it is buying three more Boeing
777-300 extended-range passenger jets--its current long-haul
workhorse--for delivery in 2015, as well as an additional Boeing
747-8 freighter for delivery in 2016.
Though the aircraft have a total list price of US$952 million,
the airline said it received substantial discounts from the
manufacturer. Cathay Pacific now operates 38 Boeing 777-300ERs, and
with the latest orders, the airline will take delivery of 15 more
of these jets in 2014 and 2015.
Meanwhile, the airline has nine Boeing 747-8 freighters, and
with the latest addition, it has five more of the jets on order
through 2016.
Last week, the airline placed orders for 21 Boeing 777-9X jets,
which are a new generation of 777 aircraft, for delivery from 2021.
The deal was Cathay Pacific's first new orders for passenger
aircraft since August 2012.
