 American Stock ExchangeL'American Stock Exchange è la terza borsa US dopo il NYSE e il NASDAQ, gestisce circa il 10% degli ordini in America. Nell'American Stock Exchange vengono scambiati titoli di compagnie di diverse dimensioni e che operano in settori diversi. L'AMEX è comunque conosciuto come il mercato che ha i requisiti per l'ammissione meno restrittivi dei tre principali mercati statunitensi, questo fa sì che parecchie piccole compagnie scelgono l'AMEX per distribuire i propri titoli azionari.
L'American Stock Exchange era il maggior concorrente del NYSE, è ora conosciuto per lo scambio di azioni di compagnie a bassa capitalizzazione, opzioni e exchange traded funds (ETF). Il mercato è di proprietà del NASD (National Association of Securities Dealers) ma opera in maniera separata dal NASDAQ.
Essendo un mercato alle grida, l'AMEX opera nella sala delle contrattazioni attraverso broker e specialisti. Ogni titolo scambiato nella borsa viene gestito da uno specialista, il quale deve occuparsi di far incontrare le richieste di venditori e acquirenti garantendo un prezzo equo per entrambe le parti. È inoltre compito dello specialista assicurare la liquidità di mercato acquistando o vendendo dal proprio account se nessun altro vuole farlo. I broker si spostano da un recinto all'altro portando ordini di acquisto e vendita agli specialisti per conto dei propri clienti.
Il mercato delle opzioni dell' American Stock Exchange è uno dei più grandi al mondo, con oltre 1700 strumenti scambiati tra opzioni su azioni, American Depository Receipts, indici, exchange traded funds e HOLDRS.
