NEW YORK/SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Coffee growers in parts of Brazil are grappling with the worst beetle infestation in recent memory as a ban on a pesticide used for 40 years has helped the destructive insect flourish, threatening bean quality and yields.
The incidence of the beetle, known as "broca," has surged in an area that grows roughly 40 percent of Brazil's crop, with estimated damage to green coffee ranging from 5 percent to 30 percent after females burrowed into beans to lay their eggs.
That will affect the quality of arabica beans sold from the region to companies such as Starbucks Corp and Nestlé SA, said Thomas Hojo, owner of Grupo Hojo, whose family farms 1,300 hectares (3,200 acres) of coffee and owns one roasting plant.
This year, broca infestations rose from 3 percent of beans in the Cerrado and Sul de Minas regions during January and February – when spraying of a non-endosulfan pesticide occurs – to 30 percent at the harvesting period, said Julio Cesar de Souza, entomologist at Epamig, the Minas Gerais state government agricultural research agency. Infestations in Sul de Minas are rare, he said.
Available pesticides have not been effective and farmers appear to have lost control of the beetle, one Brazilian exporter said.
Farmers whose crops have high levels of infestation may have difficulty finding buyers. ABIC, Brazil's coffee roasters association, recommends processors check green coffee to ensure they do not buy any shipments with more than 5 percent of beans damaged by the beetle.
Some producers and the government now predict a 35 percent to 40 percent crop failure in the Cerrado region, where arabica coffee is grown. Irregular rains, plant fatigue and broca are factors, Hojo said.
The crisis comes at a time that Brazil harvests its biennial off-cycle crop, which is naturally smaller than the prior crop, and after a drought caused the country's stocks to dwindle.

However, another weather system with cooling will arrive Friday through Monday over the East, and then track across the South during the middle of next week for near normal demand. Hot high pressure is expected to re-strengthen and gain ground late next week over the southern 2/3 of the country, while remaining mostly comfortable North. Overall, nat gas demand will be MODERATE to HIGH.

Thursday: Today’s EIA weekly storage report is expected to show a build in supplies of +24-25 Bcf by most survey averages, below the 5-year of +47 Bcf. It was warmer than normal over most of the country, especially so over the west-central US and portions of the East. There were minor cooler exceptions across the NW, SW, and small areas of the Midwest and SE.

Power Burn declines on cooler temperatures
Total US demand fell 1.9 Bcf/d to 68.3 Bcf/d for Friday, entirely the result of power burn falling 1.9 Bcf/d to 35.6 Bcf/d. The largest concentration of power burn declines came from the Southeast, which fell 1.3 Bcf/d to 10.4 Bcf/d. While regional temperatures only fell about 1 degree day-on-day, the forecast shows a sharp temperature drop through the weekend, falling 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit below normal by Sunday. Second to the Southeast, Midcon Market power burn declined 0.6 Bcf/d to 2.4 Bcf/d as regional temperatures fell to 2.7 degrees F below normal where they are expected to stay through the weekend. Lastly, the Midcon Producing region power burn declined 0.4 Bcf/d to 1.4 Bcf/d, also on the declining regional temperatures. US wide, power burn is expected to continue to drop through the weekend, declining an additional 3.0 Bcf/d to average 32.6 Bcf/d through Monday.

July 28-Aug 4: A fresh weather system with heavy showers and cooling will sweep across the S. Great Lakes & NE today, then down the East Coast this weekend into early next week. The system will finally be steered over the South during the middle of next week while weakening. Over the west-central US hot high pressure will continue to dominate with highs of upper 80s to 100s for regionally strong demand. Overall, nat gas demand will be MODERATE.
