Motorists could be gettingthe beginning of a

market turnaround that will continue to bring relief at the gasoline pump in

coming weeks and months, an Energy Department official said Tuesday.

The average gasoline price has moved below $2 a gallon for the first time in

weeks, and the Energy Department''s Energy Information Administration expects the

average price to fall to $1.82 a gallon in the second half of the year, EIA

administrator Guy Caruso told the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural

Resources.

Increased OPEC production has put downward pressure on crude prices and will

help ensure continued heavy refining activity, Caruso said, noting that gasoline

inventory levels have also improved.
