Downer EDI Ltd. (DOW.AU) said Friday that it has been awarded a contract by BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP) to supply the mining company with locomotives in the iron ore-rich Pilbara region in Western Australia.

The contract, including options, could be worth more than A$400 million (US$432 million), Downer said in a statement.

Downer has agreed to supply Electro-Motive Diesel locomotives over the next five years, with the first new locomotives expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2012.
