                    AVIVA ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF BOARD
                     AND ELECTION OF EUGENE FIEDOREK


Aviva Petroleum Inc. ("AVP") the Dallas-based oil and gas exploration and
production company, announced today that it has expanded its board from four to
five directors and elected Mr Eugene C. Fiedorek as its newest board member.

Mr Fiedorek is the Managing Director of EnCap Investments, L.C., a company he
co-founded in 1988.  He was previously associated with RepublicBank Dallas for
more than 20 years, most recently as the Managing Director in the Energy
Department in charge of all energy-related commerical lending and corporate
finance activities.  Prior to joining RepublicBank, Mr Fiedorek was with Shell
Oil Company as an Exploitation Engineer and with British-American Oil Producing
Company as a Senior Staff Engineer.  He currently serves on the boards of
Energy Capital Investment Company PLC, Apache Corporation and privatley held
Matador Petroleum Corporation.  He is a member of the Society of Petroleum
Engineers of AIME, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the
American Petroleum Institute, the Independent Petroleum Association of America
and the Texas Independent Producers & Royalty Owners Association.  Mr Fiedorek
graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. degree in Petroleum and Natural
Gas Engineering.

Ron Suttill, Aviva's CEO, said that Mr Fiedorek's breadth of experience and
current involvement in U.S. oil and gas acquisitions and financing adds an
extremely valuable new dimension to the Aviva Board.

Aviva is engaged in the exploration for and the development and production of
oil and gas in Colombia and offshore in the United States.  In addition to its
London Stock Exchange listing, the company's Depositary Shares are traded on the
American Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "AVV".
