Currently just three of the 15 markets that we track are holding positive. The cumulative average return on the group stands at a minus 0.232 percent. The Nikkei lost 37 points and looks to be attempting a break below the consolidation level of the past four sessions, but volumes were extremely light ahead of tomorrow's local holiday. In December, Japan Household spending rose for a second consecutive month, posting a 0.4 percent year-over-year rise. November's year-over-year comparisons stood at plus 0.7 percent. For the 2003 calendar year, household spending declined by 0.8 percent, marking the tenth such decline over the past 11 years. The two weekly reports on the well-being of the retail sector will be released before the market open today. For the week of January 31 we received divergent information as the ICS-UBS Store Sales Index declined by 1.3 percent, while Redbook Retail Sales rose by 0.3 percent. Today's numbers will capture the first full week of February, but will not enjoy the full impact of the Valentine's Day holiday. Retailers are currently on the top of their game as the S&P Retail Index hit an intraday high yesterday of 390.55, just shy of the index's all-time peak of 390.79 set on November 3. Use a little caution here, as the potential for a "double-top reversal" does exist. Options investors are quite bullish on the sector as the composite Schaeffer's Put/Call Open Interest Ratio (SOIR) on the sector stands at 0.47. This represents themost bullish configuration in all but four percent of the time over the past 52-weeks. Be prepared for the investing week ahead with Bernie Schaeffer's FREE Monday Morning Outlook. As a long-term admirer of California-based toy company JAKKS Pacific, Colburn and his traders will love the news that the company struck a licensing deal with Marvel Enterprises to develop a new product for JAKKS' "TV Game" line - an all-in-one handheld video game device that hooks up to the television. But the real bonus is the product theme: Spider-Man. JAKKS will develop five new Spider-Man games that will retail for $20 later this year, and as Colburn says, "With the Spider-Man movie sequel out this summer, you can safely call the TV game a cash cow for JAKKS." More good news came from another computer company - Concurrent. The stock jumped 13.4% on above average volume of 3.7 million shares. Propelling the advance was Concurrent's announcement that it will be presenting at a growth stock conference next week. The Value Edge service is behind a popular new report on the growing problem of identity theft in America.
