WatchGuard Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:WGRD), a leading provider of Unified Threat Management solutions, today announced its contribution to defending the network of the Turin Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (TOROC). At the XX Winter Olympics, WatchGuard assisted with the implementation of security projects in unique deployments in conjunction with professional on-site consultation. Specifically, every TOROC office used a Firebox X Edge as a VPN end point in its distributed network comprised of its various sites around Turin. The VPN branch office implementation connected TOROC's agencies and administration network of six offices, and was centrally controlled by a pair of Firebox X Peak appliances running in High Availability mode in the Administrative Data Center (ADC) of Turin. A Firebox X Peak was also used to connect between the network in the International Broadcast Center in Lingotto and the network that managed and monitored the Olympic closed circuit TV. The Firebox secured the traffic between the two networks and allowed remote control of the servers in Lingotto directly from the Main Technology Center in Turin. Another pair of Firebox X Peak appliances installed at the ADC provided proactive Intrusion Prevention, performing IPS functionality at remote venues. WatchGuard also supplied its UTM security appliances to remotely monitor and guarantee the continuity of generators located in Lingotto. The TOROC requested information about these security implementations be withheld until the conclusion of the Games and the disassembly of the network. According to Stefano Sandri, head of the TOROC Security Team, "Our solutions implemented and used via the WatchGuard equipment met our expectations, and we were impressed by how easy it was to configure and run the units thanks to WatchGuard's centralized management." "Security -- both physical and IT -- is always a top concern when holding an event as high-profile as the Turin games. A breach in security could endanger event organizers and attendees, as well as detract the focus from the global community spirit of the games," said John Stuckey, WatchGuard VP of Marketing. "We are extremely proud to have been able to contribute to the network security of the Turin games and would be honored to support events like this again in the future."
