Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation (NYSE:ETN) today announced it is providing power management support for IBM’s Portable Modular Data Center (PMDC). A broad range of Eaton’s power quality and power distribution components integrate with IBM’s fully functional modular data center. The PMDC can be shipped and rapidly deployed with a complete physical infrastructure in any environment.

The ability to plan, build and maintain a highly energy-efficient data center is essential to meet business objectives.”

Eaton’s energy-efficient solutios provide high power density with space-saving design as an integral part of IBM’s PMDC. The Eaton 9395 uninterruptible power system (UPS), for example, is an ideal power protection solution for IBM’s PMDC; it has the smallest footprint and lowest weight of any UPS in its class and the ability to achieve 99 percent efficiency with Eaton’s Energy Saver System.

IBM and Eaton already have experience working together on IBM’s PMDC solutions such as the PMDC containers installed at an IBM data center location in Europe which features an Eaton 550 kVA UPS, N+1 configuration, with 20 minutes of battery runtime, and associated switchgear. This installation also features a 1 megawatt diesel generator as part of the electrical infrastructure.

In 2007, IBM launched Project Big Green and committed $1 billion per year to deliver technologies that help clients dramatically increase the level of energy efficiency in their data centers. IBM introduced the PMDC as part of the second phase of Project Big Green to drive modular data center design solutions to allow clients to pay as they grow reducing capital and operating costs.

IBM will showcase some of Eaton’s energy-efficient UPSs and electrical solutions as part of IBM’s PMDC demonstration unit during the Gartner 28th Data Center Conference in Las Vegas, Dec. 1-4.
