Program Trading Rose Last Week On NYSE Along With Volume

Program trading rose last week on the NYSE Euronext's (NYX) New
York Stock Exchange as volume surged.
The daily average was 1.13 billion, or 32.5%, out of the 3.48
billion total shares that changed hands. That is up from the prior
week's rate of 25.9%, or 579.5 million of the 2.23 billion shares
that traded, on average.
The most active NYSE member firm for program trading last week
was again Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) at 1.05 billion shares for
the entire period, followed by Morgan Stanley (MS) at 793.6 million
and Deutsche Bank AG (DB) at 587.9 million. All three figures were
significantly higher than the prior week's trading.
Program trading encompasses a wide range of portfolio-trading
strategies involving the purchase or sale of a basket of at least
15 stocks.
