NYSE Euronext (NYX) said Wednesday it will provide trading of U.S. stocks through its European platform called NYSE Arca Europe, allowing trades on the securities to take place during European hours.

Trading on the components of the S&P 100 Index will begin in the second quarter, and further stocks are expected to be introduced "in the near future," the exchange said in a statement.

"This is an opportunity for us to create the first transatlantic trading platform and is an important step towards becoming a truly global multilateral trading facility," it added.

Clearing of the trades will be done through clearing house European Central Counterparty Ltd.
