NYSE Program Trading, Overall Volume Rose Last Week

Program trading surged on the New York Stock Exchange last week,
as overall activity increased even more sharply, according to the
subsidiary of NYSE Euronext (NYX).
Daily program trading volume in the week ended Feb. 25 was 665.6
million shares, or 27.2% of the daily average total of 2.45
billion. That compares with 563 million, or 29.3% of the average
total of 1.92 billion shares, a week earlier.
The week contained four days as the exchange was closed Feb. 21
in observance of the Presidents' Day holiday.
The most active NYSE member firm for program trading last week
was Morgan Stanley (MS), followed by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS)
and Barclays PLC (BCS, BARC.LN)--a frequent top-three lineup.
