Program-trading volume fell on the New York Stock Exchange
during the week ended Feb. 10 amid an overall decline in daily
volume from the prior week, according to the latest data from the
NYSE Euronext (NYX) unit.
Average daily program trading volume totaled 425.7 million
shares, or about 28% of the average daily volume. A week earlier,
program trading activity was 588.6 million shares, or about 32% of
the average daily total volume.
For the latest week, average daily total volume totaled 1.52
billion shares, down from 1.83 billion shares in the prior
week.
The most active NYSE member firm for program trading last week
was Morgan Stanley (MS), followed by Barclays Capital Inc.
Program trading encompasses a wide range of portfolio trading
strategies involving the purchase or sale of a basket of at least
15 stocks.
