On August 23, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: NYX) will bring its NYSE Big StartUp “Small Business Connections: Marketing Meets Microfinancing” nationwide workshop tour to New York City. Hosted in coordination with Big StartUp partners Accion and Yelp, the event will connect local business owners with two necessary resources for growing a business: social media marketing know-how and access to capital. New York is the fifth stop on the Small Business Connections tour and 70 business owners have already registered to attend.

During the free workshop, Darnell Holloway, Yelp’s Manager of Local Business Outreach, will advise small business owners on how to work with major social media platforms, providing strategies for engaging customers online and navigating the world of online reviews. Lending experts from micro-and small business lender Accion, which has provided nearly 13,000 loans in the New York area since 1991, will demonstrate how to develop a marketing strategy and finance marketing costs with an Accion microloan. Both Yelp business outreach staff and Accion loan consultants will be present to answer questions and offer personalized consultations to participants.

“We have been very impressed with the level of engagement we’ve seen from small business owners who are eager to learn how they can navigate the sometimes overwhelming worlds of social media and financing,” said Holloway. “Hosting this event inside the New York Stock Exchange is a great way to tie together our theme for this whole initiative: Main Street meets Wall Street.”

Additionally, Alex Rain of Kelvin Natural Slush Co. will share his experience and offer advice on how to use social media to grow a business. With the unique idea to start an all-natural slushie food truck, Alex relies heavily on social media and word of mouth to gain customers. A $25,000 loan from Accion helped Alex purchase and renovate a new cart to grow his business. Kelvin Natural Slush Co. currently has over 111 reviews on Yelp with an average 4.5 out of 5 star rating.

“Small Business Connections” is the first small business event tour from the NYSE Big StartUp, a nationwide job creation and business growth initiative that connects small businesses with established corporations, such as Yelp. Launched in March 2012, the NYSE Big StartUp program also integrates the Accion-NYSE Job Growth Fund. This program was started with a $1.5 million commitment by NYSE Euronext, which will provide small businesses and startups with the capital and support they need to grow.

The New York event builds off of the success of events held earlier this summer in Tucson, AZ and Austin and San Antonio, Texas, where over 150 small business owners in total attended workshops. “We’re proud to bring this national resource to local small business owners with the support of Yelp and NYSE,” said Gina Harman, CEO at Accion, U.S. Network. “We know that our New York event will be a huge success given the amount of technologically savvy business owners in this market.”
