Program-trading volume activity and overall volume on the New
York Stock Exchange increased last week, according to data from
NYSE Euronext (NYX).
For the week ended Feb. 8, daily program-trading volume totaled
396.6 million shares, making up 27.4% of the average daily-trading
volume. A week earlier, program-trading volume totaled 362.9
million shares, making up 25.7% of the average daily-trading
volume.
Overall average daily volume totaled 1.45 billion shares, up
from the previous week's 1.41 billion shares.
The most active NYSE-member firm for program trading last week
was Morgan Stanley (MS), followed by Barclays PLC's (BCS, BARC.LN)
Barclays Capital Inc. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s (GS) Goldman
Sachs & Co.
Program trading encompasses a wide range of strategies involving
the purchase or sale of a basket of at least 15 stocks.
