Program-trading volume activity and overall volume on the New
York Stock Exchange increased last week, according to data from
NYSE Euronext (NYX).
For the week ended March 15, daily program-trading volume
totaled 755.5 million shares, making up 39% of the average
daily-trading volume. A week earlier, program-trading volume
totaled 372.1 million shares, making up 24.8% of the average
daily-trading volume.
Overall average daily volume totaled 1.94 billion shares, up
from the previous week's 1.5 billion shares.
The most active NYSE-member firm for program trading last week
was Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s (GS) Goldman Sachs & Co.,
followed by Morgan Stanley (MS) and Barclays PLC's (BCS, BARC.LN)
Barclays Capital Inc.
Program trading encompasses a wide range of strategies involving
the purchase or sale of a basket of at least 15 stocks.
