"The company has a century-long tradition of supporting
charitable causes that improve the quality of life for people in
all the geographies in which we operate," said company Chairman
Ward ("Tim") J. Timken, Jr. "With our global headquarters in the
U.S., the company supports the men and women who make personal
sacrifices for this country. From our employment policies to our
products to this recent contribution, the company is committed to
supporting the safety and well-being of our troops."
Employment Practices
Timken employs nearly 1,200 associates with military experience
at its operations in the United
States. More than half of these veterans and reservists are
employed at operations in Ohio,
where the company is headquartered. The company actively seeks
veterans when hiring, particularly in its precision manufacturing
operations where technical savvy and a commitment to quality and
safety are paramount.
Timken employees also are developing an associate resource group
(ARG) for those with military service. ARGs are designed to provide
support and opportunity to associates with similar interests while
providing feedback and leadership within the organization to
promote collaboration and stronger performance.
In recent years, the company has been honored by the Employer
Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense
organization, with both its Patriot Award and Above and Beyond
Award, which recognizes employers who have gone beyond the legal
requirements for granting leave and providing support for military
duty by their employees.
Defense Products
Timken supplies bearing products and repair services, gears,
gearboxes and housings for a wide variety of military applications
that protect soldiers in the field. While this is a small portion
of the company's overall business, the 1,900 Timken employees in
its aerospace and defense facilities bring distinct knowledge to
give military equipment a competitive edge and even keep it
operational when damaged. Timken transmissions are found in
military helicopters such as the Boeing AH-64 Apache, Sikorsky
UH-60 BLACK HAWK and V-22 Osprey.
Timken also equips fighter jet engines and gearboxes, including
the F414 engine powering the F/A-18 Super Hornet and the GE Model
T700 engine used in Apache helicopters. Military land vehicles,
such as the Abrams tank and the armored MRAP (mine resistant ambush
protected) and MRAP-ATV, also have Timken products on board. Timken
bearings are found in the Honeywell Model 36 Auxiliary Power Unit
and in the Arrowhead infrared sensor systems, which are used to
ensure safe flight for varied climate conditions and support
accurate target controls.
"Our associates understand that their dedication to precision
manufacturing and quality control plays a critical role in the
safety of military troops," said Richard G. Kyle,
president of Timken's Mobile Industries and Aerospace and Defense
business segments. "They take great pride in knowing their efforts
can make a difference to the safety of our military forces."
