Volkswagen's Wolfsburg facility in Germany has been searched as part of an investigation by the Braunschweig prosecutor's office into allegedly exorbitant salaries for members of the company's works council.

A spokesperson from the prosecutor's office said the raid relates to salaries for work council members that allegedly constitute preferential treatment under the Works Constitution Act. Four private properties were also searched, the spokesperson said, but it is unclear if those raids were part of the same investigation.

Volkswagen did not immediately return a request for comment. German press agency dpa first reported the investigation.
