TSX-V: HEMP
VANCOUVER, Jan. 17, 2019 /CNW/ - Hempco Food and Fiber
Inc. (the 'Company" or "Hempco") (TSX-V: HEMP) is encouraged
by Health Canada's proposed changes to the upcoming Canada Food
Guide to be released later this year.
As part of its multi-year Healthy Eating Strategy, Health
Canada's latest Food Guide provides practical, nutritious eating
recommendations based on best evidence, to help Canadians make
sound food choices.
In this latest iteration of the Food Guide, Health Canada is
proposing to reduce its legacy 'four major food groups' to
three:
- vegetables and fruit;
- whole grains, and
- protein-rich foods, especially plant-based sources of
protein.
"It is clear that for a healthier body and planet, encouraging
Canadians to eat more plant-based proteins is a step in the right
direction. For those looking for alternatives to animal-based
proteins, there are a variety of healthy, plant-based options
including hemp. Hemp is nutrient-dense, providing valuable omega 3
fatty acids and minerals such as iron, in addition to plant-based
protein," said Desiree
Nielsen, Registered Dietitian.
"As a leading producer of hemp-based food products, including
our consumer package goods Planet Hemp™ Superfood, Hempco is
very pleased to see this shift to protein-rich, plant-based food
choices in the latest update to Canada's Food Guide. It's evidence that more
Canadians are not just recognizing the nutritional benefits of a
plant-based diet, but also the overall positive effects it has on
sustaining our environment," said Diane
Jang, CEO of Hempco Food and Fiber Inc.
