Hungary has raised 43.9 billion forints ($197 million) through a
successful auction of mobile frequencies, the National
Infocommunications Authority said Tuesday.
The authority held the tender to sell a 10.8 megahertz frequency
band available for broadening electronic telecommunications
services within the 900 MHz band.
A consortium led by state-owned electricity wholesaler MVM Zrt.
was declared the winner in the A block, which covers a frequency
range suitable for both Internet and voice services. The consortium
bid 10 billion forints ($44.9 billion), the authority said.
The other mobile phone companies that currently operate in
Hungary--Norway's Telenor ASA (TEL.OS), the U.K.'s Vodafone Group
PLC (VOD) and Magyar Telekom Nyrt. (MTELEKOM.BU), owned by
Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE.XE)--were awarded parts of the
frequency band on offer in the less valuable B block, best suited
for Internet services in rural areas. Vodafone bid HUF15.7 billion,
Magyar Telekom bid HUF10.9 billion and Telenor offered HUF7.3
billion, the authority said.
Altogether, the applicants bid HUF43.9 billion.
