Revenue growth at Europe's cable operators accelerated in 2011, principally due to the wider use of combined television, Internet and fixed-line telephone services over a single connection, or "triple play."

The industry generated EUR19.9 billion in revenue last year, up 7% compared with a year earlier, industry body Cable Europe said Wednesday. By comparison, revenue grew 6% in 2010 and 3% in 2009.

Speaking at Cable Congress 2012 here, Cable Europe President Manuel Kohnstamm said the figures show "cable operators are more than holding their own against other platforms, even in today's highly competitive, highly dynamic markets."

The number of homes in the European Union receiving digital TV services from cable operators rose 13% from a year earlier, as countries continue to switch away from analog services.
