CALGARY, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Canadian Pacific Railway's $160 million Western Corridor Expansion Program is on track with 70 per cent of the work completed and more than half of the individual projects concluded. In April, the company announced 25 expansion projects would begin between Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and the Port of Vancouver. When all projects are complete, CPR will be able to run an additional four trains daily between the Prairies and the Port of Vancouver, a 12-per-cent increase in capacity. The work involves building and extending sidings, laying sections of double track, improving signal systems and installing staging tracks and track-to-track crossovers. The completion of two key track initiatives in the Kamloops area brings the number of projects now complete to 14 with the remaining 11 on track for completion by the end of the company's fourth quarter. Highlighting the now completed work east of Kamloops is double tracking at Clanwilliam and Pritchard, which will improve train operations in this area. Along with other materials required in the project work, over 3,000 tons of steel rail and more than 80,000 tons of rock ballast have been used to complete the first 14 projects. CPR is expanding its capacity to move more bulk commodities and resources to the Port of Vancouver to meet the demand of Asian markets. CPR is also moving increasing volumes of finished goods, shipped in containers arriving from Asia, to consumers in the U.S. and Canada. CPR's $160-million expansion program this year is in addition to planned capital investment of approximately $760 million. As well, CPR has taken other steps to support Canada's economy, including hiring hundreds of new train crew employees, adding more modern locomotives and rail cars and undertaking an aggressive track maintenance program across its system.
