Oct. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pitney Bowes Inc (NYSE: PBI) has
been named to CMP Media LLC's InformationWeek 500, a prestigious
listing of the most innovative users of information technology in
the United States. "We are gratified that Pitney Bowes has been
named to the Information Week 500. We take great pride in our
intelligent use of technology and in our creation of technology
that helps drive shareholder and customer value," said Gregory
Buoncontri, Chief Information Officer for Pitney Bowes. "Pitney
Bowes intellectual property portfolio includes more than 3,500
patents worldwide in areas such as ticketing, cellular telephones,
shipping, laser printing, encryption, and mailing," said
Buoncontri, "Pitney Bowes is consistently ranked in the top 200
companies receiving U.S. patents by the Intellectual Property
Owners (IPO) Association. In addition, Pitney Bowes has taken a
leadership position in our use of technologies that create customer
value, such as our rollout of wireless CRM to our field service
staff." For 16 years, the InformationWeek 500 has tracked
organizations' IT agendas, providing a unique opportunity to
understand and examine their business practices across core areas
of technology operations. Companies named to this list demonstrate
a pattern of technological and organizational innovation. E.&J.
Gallo Winery which is ranked No. 1, along with Verizon
Communications and Marriott International, are some of the
household names that made the list. Pitney Bowes is among the 500
companies recognized for IT innovation this year. "Tech initiatives
balance between opportunistic investment and cost effectiveness,"
said Rusty Weston, editor of InformationWeek Research. "On average,
the InformationWeek 500 will invest approximately 3.7% of their
annual revenue on technology in 2004 for an average cash layout of
$334 million. Business-intelligence tools, content-management
software, and increased use of automated processes are widespread
strategies aimed at squeezing more costs out of IT operations."
"The InformationWeek 500 has also made major strides in corporate
accountability in the past 12 months," said Stephanie Stahl,
editor-in-chief of InformationWeek. "Compliance with government
regulations such as Sarbanes- Oxley, HIPAA, and the Can-Spam Act
accounts for some of the progress. Yet 99% of the nation's most
innovative companies analyze the return on their IT investments and
nearly 90% conduct performance assessments on existing business and
technology processes, signifying that accountability among this
year's 500 is as much about meeting internal expectations as it is
about achieving externally imposed guidelines." The InformationWeek
500 is the most detailed source of industry-specific IT budget
data. The research project gathered in-depth information directly
from companies about how they approach and prioritize their IT
investments. The research identified and ranked the companies
following an extensive online and phone study. About Pitney Bowes
