Marconi Demonstrates New Forms of Communication at SC2004 Conference in Pittsburgh Marconi's high-performance computer networks bring multi-media applications to Pittsburgh from Germany, Hawaii and Washington, D.C. PITTSBURGH, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- High-performance computer networks are connection points for the most important applications of information technology. Built on a tradition of engineering excellence, Marconi Federal, part of Marconi's Broadband Routing & Switching group in Pittsburgh, designs, deploys and maintains in U.S. government environments some of the most advanced networking technology and mission-critical applications in use today. At the SC2004 High Performance Computing, Networking and Storage Conference in Pittsburgh, November 8-11, Marconi Federal and its partners are demonstrating how their high-performance computer networks enable the mission- critical applications in use now by defense and intelligence agencies, by organizations charged with deploying new electronic security systems to safeguard our society, as well as network-driven applications vital to making new scientific discoveries. The solutions being demonstrated by Marconi Federal also include security features that resist hacking or denial of service attacks and network management features that allow operators to perform maintenance routines, update software or configure equipment anywhere in the world from a single network operations center. SC2004 Schedule -- Marconi Federal's demonstrations will be shown at the SC2004 Conference, Nov. 9 - 11, 10 to 6 p.m., at booth #1132 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center -- Media are invited to a special preview tour of the SC2004 Conference on Monday, Nov. 8 from 6 to 7 p.m. -- On Tuesday and Wednesday, at 11 a.m. and again at 3 p.m., Marconi Federal will provide the public with its first look at advanced multi- media telephony over a very wide area network - connecting Hawaii to Washington, D.C., to Pittsburgh to Germany - showing real-time, virtual presence communications. Marconi Federal Demonstration Details Network-based Physical Security and Surveillance Marconi Federal extends the expertise it developed in building networks that service the critical information needs of the Department of Defense and the intelligence community to similar requirements in homeland security, public safety and the protection of critical transportation centers. The demonstration of Marconi's network-based, integrated electronic security solutions shows how reliable, fast, secure networks enable previously stand- alone security systems to work together, providing security professionals an enhanced ability to deter, pre-empt, prevent or respond to crises. Marconi's solution, including its networking platforms and a custom-designed desktop graphic interface, is flexible enough to meet current needs, such as integrating surveillance cameras, door access controls and emergency voice systems, and easily expands to include next-generation security systems that include biometric identification devices, sensor-based perimeter defense systems and object identification and tracking systems. Customers include Miami International Airport and the Paris Metro, where 1,500 Local Area Networks are integrated with over 40,000 telephone lines, more than 8,000 video surveillance cameras and about 300 video monitors. Worldwide 15-way videoconferencing - with "you are there" presence Integrated with Marconi's security and surveillance solution or used by itself, Marconi's ViPr(TM) Virtual Presence System is an easy-to-use, flexible, high-resolution video telephony and multimedia communications platform - either desktop or conference-room sized - that can connect up to 15 people at a time. The demonstration will use ViPr for calls between Germany, Washington, D.C., Hawaii and Pittsburgh, showing its virtually delay-free videoconferencing capabilities. ViPr is in wide use in the U.S. government and in civilian sectors, such as King County's (Seattle) Emergency Management Agency, to help coordinate responses during emergencies. The 13th Judicial Circuit of the State of Florida in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa and surrounding areas, recently replaced its analog videoconferencing system with ViPr to expand the capability for remote hearings, witness testimony, language translation and court-administration. Added to Marconi's electronic network security system, ViPr transforms local perimeter security to a nationwide command-and-control network, making it easier to escalate management of an emergency to regional, state or national officials. Anytime, anyplace storage access across the wide area network Pulling image-rich data from a storage cluster at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh, Marconi Federal shows how information can be accessed no matter where it may be stored, as quickly and accurately as if it were stored in your office. Applications for this demonstration include disaster recovery, quick access to mission-critical data by remote users, distributed storage to speed the dissemination of large files. Marconi products used in this demonstration include the BXR(TM)-48000, a 480 Gbps multiservice router, and the MPG(TM)-1000 high-speed Media and Protocol Gateway, newly introduced here at the SC2004 Conference. In this demonstration, the MPG-1000 is performing as a gateway between the storage cluster and the wide area network. World-wide area computing clusters Taking advantage of Marconi's high-speed, highly reliable networking platforms, this demonstration shows how complex, data-driven problems can be addressed by linking massive computer processing assets across vast distances, creating a network-based cluster of supercomputers. The problems that can be addressed by clusters of supercomputers include analyzing space exploration data, weather forecasting, oil and gas exploration, earthquake predictions and medical research. For this demonstration, Marconi's BXR-48000 will transport 10 Gbps (OC-192c) data streams using both ATM and POS (packet over SONET) simultaneously. Marconi believes this is the first time the same networking device has simultaneously transported data at such high speeds, showing the operating efficiencies and cost-savings a network operator can achieve with such a flexible platform instead of the standard practice of using two different networking appliances to achieve the same results.
