RNS No 3621h
HODDER HEADLINE PLC
5th December 1997

Hodder & Stoughton Limited's litigation against International
Book Distributors Limited to protect UK trade mark and goodwill
issues surrounding H&S's successful Teach Yourself series has
been settled during trial, with the payment of an undisclosed
amount to Hodder & Stoughton Limited.

IBD and the Simon & Schuster companies it distributes have
agreed not to publish, distribute, or promote in the UK any
works using in their title "Teach Yourself" which could cause
confusion in terms of wording, trade dress or marketing with
the long-established H&S series. IBD, however, under licence
from H&S, can continue to import, advertise and distribute
specifically its line of bestselling trade computer titles
imported from Sams Publishing.

Tim Hely Hutchinson, Group Chief Executive of Hodder Headline
PLC, said :

"We are pleased to have reached an amicable agreement with a
respected competitor. Hodder & Stoughton's Teach Yourself
series has been available since 1938 and has sold over 40
million copies. We will continue to protect our trade marks
and our goodwill in the Teach Yourself name and logo."

John Isley, President of Simon & Schuster Europe, said :

"I'm delighted we were able to resolve the trade mark issues
involved in a way that protects the distinctive H&S series
while still allowing British booksellers and customers access
to our outstanding series of imported computer titles."
