Overseas trading is extremely strong this morning, with all 15 of
the markets that we follow in positive territory. The cumulative

Asia, the Nikkei closed with a 0.83-percent jump, while the Hang
Seng added 0.22 percent. Meanwhile, European issues rallied, led by
steel producers such as Arcelor and Corus Group, as investors
digested a heavy day of French corporate news. At last check, the
French CAC 40 was leading the way with a 0.34-percent gain. The
London FTSE 100 has tacked on 0.20 percent and the German DAX was
up 0.14 percent. The September contract on sweet crude oil inched
0.34 percent higher on Tuesday. In early trading this morning, the
futures contract is down 27 cents to $58.93 a barrel as traders

MARKET OPPORTUNITIES The list is a lengthy and dubious one. In the
auto world, it consists of Detroit heavyweights General Motors and
Ford. In the computer hardware business, there's Hewlett-Packard
and IBM. Kodak, Kimberly-Clark and Alcoa are members, too. The list
goes on. All told, US companies planned to lay off 111,000
employees in June, according to job recruitment firm Challenger,
Gray and Christmas. That's the highest monthly total in 17 months.
Some of the poorer statistics include another 10,000 job losses at
Kodak, as the company recorded its third straight quarterly
earnings loss. That forced the company to substantially raise its
range of job losses from 12,000 to 15,000 to 22,000 to 25,000.
According to the Associated Press, its worldwide payroll numbers
will total under 50,000 - one-third the level from 1988.
Hewlett-Packard will shed 10% of its workforce (14,500 employees).
Ford will cast aside 5% of its North American workforce by October
1, resulting in the loss of 1,700 jobs. Troubled retailer
Winn-Dixie will lose a massive 28% of its employees (22,000) as it
closes 326 stores. Kimberly-Clark will shut 20 of its plants,
losing 6,000 workers in the process. As part of a worldwide
restructuring plan, Alcoa will distribute pink slips to 6,500 of
its employees. And in the 18 months following its buyout of TD
Waterhouse, Ameritrade will chop one-third of its workforce (1,500
jobs). Despite this dose of bad news, however, it's worth
remembering that the US economy has created two million jobs this
year, while the jobless rate has sunk to 5%. But this rash of
layoff announcements does indicate that the market has peaked, with
fierce competition in many industries meaning pressured companies
have tougher times in store for the rest of the year at least. Read
