ArcelorMittal (MT), the world's largest steelmaker, is extending the temporary shutdown of its long products operations at the Rodange and Schifflange steel plants in Luxembourg to the end of the first quarter 2012, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

ArcelorMittal temporarily idled those operations--an electric arc furnace and two long product lines at Schifflange and one of two long product lines at Rodange--in October for three months due to weak steel demand. It is now extending the temporary shutdown due to continued weakness in the long products steel market.

"At the end of the first quarter we would have to [look at] how the demand situation has developed to see if we could restart production," the spokesman said.

ArcelorMittal produces rails, rebars, and sheet piles at Rodange and Schifflange.

The two other longs production sites in Luxembourg, Belval and Differdange, remain in operation, the spokesman said. The Electric Arc Furnace at Differdange was shutdown due to an accident but restarted as planned in November, he said.
