Air Liquide SA and ArcelorMittal have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop ways to produce low-carbon steel in Dunkirk, France, the two companies said Wednesday.

The companies said Air Liquide will supply carbon capture technology and low-carbon hydrogen to ArcelorMittal, which will decrease yearly carbon dioxide emissions at its facilities in Dunkirk by 2.85 million metric tons by 2030.

ArcelorMittal will use a submerged arc furnace and direct reduced iron unit in Dunkirk to drive the production of low-carbon steel, the companies said.

The companies didn't disclose the financial details of the arrangement.
