Facts about CP in this city

  • On June 1st, 1875, Judge Van Norman turned the first sod on the construction of the Pacific Railway, what would become part of the CPR, at a location on the left bank of the Kaministiquia River, about six kilometres from Fort William, now Thunder Bay.
  • Before completion of the all-rail route around Lake Superior in May 1885, westbound passengers boarded CPR ships at Owen Sound and sailed via the North Channel of Lake Huron and across Lake Superior to Port Arthur. Upon completion of the mainline, the summer-time lake route was sustained by tourist traffic.
  • Today, CP employs approximately 170 people in Thunder Bay.
  • Even though the Eastern Time zone starts at Upsala, the railway operates on central time all the way to Thunder Bay.

Please send requests to speak to a CP spokesperson to Alert_MediaRelations@cpr.ca. If media are planning on attending, please RSVP to Alert_MediaRelations@cpr.ca.
