UniCredit shareholders have given their approval for the Italian bank to buyback up to 2.5 billion euros worth ($2.64 billion) of shares.

The measure was voted on during the bank's ordinary shareholder meeting, Friday.

The vote follows the European Central Bank's approval of the buyback plan late on Thursday.
