Business Wire
Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MSI), a leader in the
development of Public Safety Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks,
devices, applications and services, today commends the Bay Area
Regional Interoperable Communications System (BayRICS) Authority on
the approval of the build, operate, own and maintain (BOOM)
agreement to build a 700 MHz public safety long-term evolution
(LTE) network in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The agreement when executed will be a key step toward realizing
the Bay Area Wireless Enhanced Broadband (BayWEB) project, which
will allow police, fire and other emergency services agencies
across the area to access urgent data and collaborate in real-time
via voice and video on a dedicated, fast and reliable broadband
mission critical network. Funded in part by a $50.6 million grant
from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration
(NTIA), Motorola will work closely with both the NTIA and Bay Area
Public Safety Agencies to begin the build-out of a vastly improved
emergency communication system for the Bay Area.
KEY FACTS
- BayWEB will provide a unified, mission
critical multimedia broadband network for the Bay Area.
- With the completion of the project,
BayWEB will help increase efficiency and safety in the field by
providing public safety with invaluable strategic and tactical
data, greater in-field productivity and real-time video
information, all on demand and prioritized for first
responders.
- With a private broadband network,
public safety professionals will have highly secure,
highly-reliable connectivity for emergencies, natural disaster and
catastrophic events.
- Motorola and BayRICS focused on a
full-scale interoperability approach to ensure LTE-based
communications interoperate fully with the existing Project 25
standards-based networks used in the various participating counties
in the Bay Area.
- The BayWEB project will support more
than 100 sites across the Bay Area and will also lay the groundwork
for future expansion to support additional areas and services.
SUPPORTING QUOTES
Debora Courtright, vice president, North America Government
Markets, Motorola Solutions
“The BOOM agreement approval is a significant step toward
realizing the BayWEB project, which is due in large part to the
hard work, collaboration and dedication of BayRICS members, the
NTIA and public safety officials. I commend the tireless efforts of
this group as we continue to work together to develop and deploy an
innovative mission critical communication network to achieve true
public safety interoperability. Motorola Solutions is committed to
the successful completion of BayWEB, and we believe the project
will be a long-term benefit to the safety of the seven million
people in the Bay Area communities.”
Rich Lucia, chairman, BayRICS Authority and undersheriff,
Alameda County, Calif.
"Months of collaborative work between governments and emergency
responders from across the Bay Area will now result in our region
having the most advanced public safety communications network in
the nation. It will greatly assist our police, fire and EMS
personnel with a state-of-the-art tool that will help them do their
jobs more efficiently and more safely, and will also make all our
region better prepared to respond in instances of crime, fire,
terrorist attacks and natural disasters."
Greg Suhr, chief of police, San Francisco
“The BayWEB project is an essential tool for public safety
across the Bay Area. BayWEB will provide the kind of interoperable
communications that help to better protect our officers on the
streets and help them keep our neighborhoods safe. This long
overdue and greatly needed network will be one of the most advanced
public safety communications systems in the nation available at
this time.”
Steve Falk, president, San Francisco Chamber of
Commerce
“Business and labor agree that BayWEB is exactly the kind of
innovative public-private partnership the region needs to enhance
public safety communications and create jobs. Today’s overwhelming
approval of the project by the BayRICS JPA demonstrates both the
need for this system for public safety and also the strong resolve
of our visionary public safety and political leaders throughout the
Bay Area.”
Gary Delagnes, president, San Francisco Police Officers’
Association
“I am pleased that so many entities have chosen to participate
in this exciting project and that the JPA members who voted ‘yes’
listened to their police officers in the field who overwhelmingly
support this project. BayWEB will help make our officers safer and
provide communications that will help us to be more responsive and
efficient as we respond to and investigate crimes.”
Thomas P. O’Connor, president, Firefighters Local 798
“On behalf of firefighters across the region, we are pleased
this important and long overdue system for the Bay Area is now on a
clear track to become a reality. This means residents of our region
will have greatly enhanced communications for their firefighters.
We applaud the leaders who made this possible and for responding to
the needs of those who serve.”
